What you should know about adjustable dumbbells

Weights are expensive, so buying a set of adjustable dumbbells can save you hundreds of pounds. They're a great choice for your home workouts because you can access a wide range of weights like you would in a commercial gym with just a single piece of kit. You might notice a bit of light rattling in the dumbbell due to it not having a fixed build, but that’s natural. Our adjustable dumbbells are high-quality, durable and ready for your next workout.

FAQ

01

How do adjustable dumbbells work?

Adjustable dumbbells work by using a spinner that locks onto a different number of weight plates depending on how you set it. If you want to go light, you can lock the dumbbell in place with only its lightest weight plate. If you want to go heavy, lock all of the plates to your dumbbell to access its maximum weight.

02

What are the benefits of adjustable dumbbells?

The clear benefits of adjustable dumbbells are that they save space and save money. To have all of the weights you need in fixed dumbbells requires a lot of storage. Adjustable dumbbells take this functionality and turn it into one small footprint instead. They’re also economical. With our 5kg-32.5kg dumbbell, you can access 12 different weights in one. Think about the money that saves you compared to buying each of those dumbbells in a set.

03

Are adjustable dumbbells suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. If you’re just starting out with strength training, a pair of adjustable dumbbells is a great idea to future proof your workouts and to give you the weight options you need to hit every muscle. Some exercises need different levels of resistance to others. You might need a light set of dumbbells for lateral raises, but a heavy pair for shoulder press. That’s where adjustable dumbbells come into their own, by giving you the weight options you need across exercises. Check out our 2.5kg-12.5kg dumbbell if you’re at the start of your journey. It has five different weight settings in jumps of 2.5kg.

04

How do I choose the right weight of adjustable dumbbell?

Only you know how strong you are, but it’s smart to buy for the future. If your strength increases quickly, you might be in a position where you’ve already advanced past the dumbbell you have. If you’re newer to strength training, check out our 2.5kg-12.5kg or our 2.5kg-25kg dumbbells. If you already have some experience under your belt, consider the 5kg-32.5kg set. And if you’re lifting heavy, pick up the 5kg-40kg dumbbell to really give yourself a challenge.

05

What exercises can I do with adjustable dumbbells?

You can do all of the pushing and the pressing that you would with a regular set of dumbbells, but we’d advise against doing snatching and swinging exercises with an adjustable dumbbell. They’re designed to be used in controlled movements only.

06

What’s the warranty on your adjustable dumbbells?

All of our products come with one year of warranty. Check our warranty information page for full details.

07

Can I purchase additional weight plates for my adjustable dumbbells?

You can’t buy additional weights for our quick select adjustable dumbbells. That’s why it’s important to buy the right weight level for you so you’re covered in the future.

08

Are there any safety precautions to take with adjustable dumbbells?

As with any weight, be sensible when you’re using an adjustable dumbbell. Store it inside and in a dry place to avoid any of the materials weakening and make sure the locking mechanism is looked after.

09

Can I drop adjustable dumbbells?

No. The locking mechanism means they’re not as tough as their fixed counterparts so they can’t be thrown down after a set.
