What you should know about hex dumbbells

Hex dumbbells are a popular type of dumbbell. Their name comes from the hexagonal heads that crown either side of the weight, which in itself has a few benefits over the traditional round shape.

For starters, hex dumbbells are anti-roll which is a small but surprisingly useful feature. After you’ve finished a set and dropped your dumbbells, you know they’re going to be exactly where you left them when rest time is over. Compare that to round dumbbells, and they could be halfway across the gym by the time you’re ready to go again.

Hex dumbbells can also be used for floor exercises, which covers any movement that requires you to be in a plank position while holding a pair of dumbbells.

They’re a real rock to have in your gym setup. If you have any questions about our hex dumbbells, skim through the FAQs below or get in touch with a member of our team who’ll be happy to help.

FAQs:

01

What’s the difference between hex dumbbells and round dumbbells?

While the differences between a hex dumbbell and a round one are minor they’re still worth mentioning. A hex dumbbell is great because it won’t roll around after you’ve set it down due to its flat sides. It’s also easier to perform floor movements with a hex dumbbell as you can stand them up on the flat edges.

However, hex dumbbells aren’t quite as comfortable to push off your legs when performing heavy pressing movements, so it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Each dumbbell has its own qualities.

02

What are hex dumbbells made out of?

Our hex dumbbells are made out of a cast iron core that’s encased in a high-quality rubber coating. The handles are made of stainless steel.

03

What’s the benefit of dumbbells not rolling around?

Convenience, ultimately. You might have noticed it yourself when training down your local gym — you’ve finished a set, laid the weights on the floor and by the time you’re ready to train again they’ve rolled over to the bench next to you. It’s certainly not the end of the world but it’s handy to avoid.

04

What floor exercises can I do with hex dumbbells?

The main example we use when talking about floor exercises are renegade rows. These are where you hold a high plank with a dumbbell in each hand. Then, while maintaining the plank, you alternate between rowing each arm back and forth.

Besides this, the hexagonal shape can make them more comfortable to hold in exercises like the goblet squat or the overhead extension where you need to cradle the dumbbell’s head in your palms.

05

What weight do hex dumbbells go up to?

Our standard hex dumbbells range from 1-50kg, our neoprene dumbbells range from 1-10kg and our commercial-grade polyurethane dumbbells range from 5-40kg.

06

Where can I store hex dumbbells?

Ideally you’d store your hex dumbbells on a dedicated storage rack, but failing that they’re very convenient to keep on the floor or stack on top of each other. The hexagonal shape means you can build something of a dumbbell tower in the corner of your room for whenever you’re ready to train.

07

Can I drop hex dumbbells?

Yes, the rubber coating protects the dumbbell and your flooring from damage. We must clarify though that it’s only safe to drop dumbbells on dedicated gym flooring, and in cases where you’re not on the ground floor of a building make certain that it’s safe to drop heavy weights on the floor.

08

How long after ordering until my dumbbells arrive?

If you place your order before 12pm on a weekday then you’ll receive your items the very next day. The only exceptions to this are a) dumbbells over 32.5kg, as these need to be dispatched on a pallet, and b) orders to the Scottish Highlands or Northern Ireland.

09

Do you offer free delivery?

Yes, all orders over £50 qualify for free delivery.

10

What’s your returns policy?

You can return your dumbbells for an exchange or refund within 30 days so long as they’re unused and still in their original packaging.

11

What’s the warranty on your products?

All of our products come with one year of warranty.
