We’re firm believers at MuscleSquad that it’s essential to be a domain expert in your field to develop the best products. It’s those small changes we make to a squat rack or functional trainer that come from years of training and embedding ourselves in the fitness industry — not to mention being able to help our customers with exercising safely, proper form and avoiding the risk of injury.
In our fitness expert series, we’re introducing some of the people that embody this part of our company.
Steph — Head of Marketing & PT
Steph is our Head of Marketing and leads our promo plans and marketing strategy. After spending more than 10 years at UK retail giant Argos in a number of different marketing and campaign positions, Steph now runs the day-to-day operations at MuscleSquad alongside her husband and company founder Chris.
What’s your role at MuscleSquad?
“I’m the Head of Marketing here so spend my time between managing our promotional calendar, overseeing email campaigns, monitoring paid performance and assisting in the admin and daily running of the business. I’m also a qualified personal trainer so have been roped into product shoots more than once!”
What got you into training?
“I did a lot of dance when I was younger and managed to continue that into adulthood, so I’ve always had a good baseline of fitness. I decided to hang up my dance shoes in my thirties but I wanted to stay fit, so I started group exercise classes with a friend and have never looked back. I was hooked!”
What’s something you wish you knew when you started?
“It’s a simple one for me really: you can't out-train a bad diet.”
Home gyms or commercial gyms?
“I'm lucky enough to have a well-equipped home gym, but nothing beats working out with other people for me. I enjoy the social aspect and buzz of a commercial gym — I guess I’m motivated by being around other people.”
What’s your favourite exercise?
“Controversially, I’d say the Bulgarian split squat as you can really feel the muscles working! It's a great all-rounder for the lower body and can even burn fat and tone up your tummy, too.”
What’s an underrated exercise that more people should do?
“Walking! It's easy, free and convenient. Plus it's low-impact, gets your heart rate up and has great mental health benefits.”
What’s your favourite thing about training?
“The positive message it sends to my young daughter. I want her to grow up understanding the importance of physical activity and looking after your body.”
Who’s your fitness idol?
“I have two: Bradley Simmonds and Alice Liveing. I like their no-nonsense approaches to fitness and their online workouts got me through lockdown!”
What do you enjoy doing outside of training?
“I enjoy learning new things, which is why a couple of years ago I completed my personal training qualification. I am also a fully-trained nail technician. Outside of training and my role at MuscleSquad, my main focus is looking after my little girl and ensuring that I'm good role model for her.”
If you could only use one piece of fitness equipment for the rest of your life, what would it be?
“There's not much you can't do with a kettlebell. You can get a full body workout in, burn calories, improve strength, build lean muscle, increase your range of motion...the list is endless!”
