If you’re a gym-goer who’s looking to join the home gym movement, or just starting out on your fitness journey and looking to make the most out of your home workouts, then we have five essential pieces of kit to get started with right here.
What are the essential pieces of home gym equipment?
Our home gym essentials are the everyday pieces of equipment that are broad in their use cases without being too expensive or demanding in the amount of space they take up.
Our five pieces of essential home gym equipment are:
Adjustable dumbbells
One of the most versatile weightlifting options for use in your own home, adjustable dumbbells are designed to provide a range of weight options in a single pair of dumbbells. With a quick twist and lock, you can move from a 5kg pair of dumbbells all the way up to a 40kg pair.
We have two pairs of adjustable dumbbells that we’d recommend to people depending on their strength level.
Folding weight bench
A sturdy weight bench is the Heinz to your ketchup after purchasing a pair of adjustable dumbbells. Through this reliable combo, you can train all manner of upper and lower body movements, from rows and presses to split-squats and hip thrusts.
It’s important to choose a weight bench with a suitable max load for your training. Our benches range from a 170kg load on the entry-level of the spectrum all the way up to north of 300kg on the commercial side of things.
If you’re just starting out, we think you’ll get on fine with our Phase 1 weight bench.
Kettlebells
If dumbbells are known for building size, then kettlebells are best known for their use in toning, flexibility and even extra resistance in cardio movements.
Their unique shape makes them more suitable than dumbbells for exercises like kettlebell swings, goblet squats and halos, but their uses don’t stop there. To save money and space, why not use your kettlebells for exercises like shoulder press and tricep extensions? You can build a compact and affordable home gym setup with a mixture of dumbbells and kettlebells at different weights.
Resistance bands
👉 Set of three resistance bands
Resistance bands are a great piece of home gym equipment for building strength, flexibility and even rehabbing muscles if you’re returning from an injury.
They usually come in sets where each band has a different level of resistance, allowing you to warm up and stretch with the light band and train hard with the heavy one. What’s more, they’re an extremely affordable option to get started with your fitness at home and have a small footprint which makes them ideal for training on the go.
Treadmill
It’s the most popular cardio machine in commercial gyms for a reason. Having a treadmill at home opens the door to 24/7 cardio training whenever the mood takes you. No more waiting for the weather to clear up or avoiding running in the winter when it gets dark early — just what you need to stay on top of your training.
Plus, modern treadmills come with incline settings for added resistance and interactive dashboards where you can track distance, steps and other helpful metrics. To get started on your cardio grind, we have to recommend our economical P100 treadmill.
Closing thoughts
While these five items are our essentials, the list is going to change based on your requirements. If these haven’t quite met your needs, check out our garage gym ideas for a more complete setup, or our home gym ideas for ways you can tuck your workout equipment neatly away in your house.
However you choose to outfit your space, it’s the movement and showing up to train that counts.
