Weight plates are the discs you load onto a barbell or dumbbell to set how heavy a lift is. Adding a little more weight over time, known as progressive overload, is how you build strength and muscle.
Our range covers rubber bumper, tri-grip, competition and 1-inch plates, from 0.25kg fractional plates up to 25kg bumpers. Every plate is sold in pairs, and our Olympic style plates come in sets so you can get everything you need in one purchase.
01
Which weight plates should I get?
The best weight plates for most home gyms are rubber bumpers for lifting from the floor and tri-grips for easy loading.
We sell six main types of weight plate, each with its own advantages.
Tri-grips are our most popular plates, since they can be easily racked and unracked from a bar.
02
Should I choose bumper or tri-grip plates?
Choose bumper plates if you lift from the floor or drop the bar, and tri-grip plates if you want plates that are easy to load, carry and use on their own.
Bumper plates are all the same diameter, so the bar starts at the same height whatever the weight. Their thick rubber takes the impact of a dropped bar. Tri-grip plates have three handles for easier loading and plate exercises. Our Rubber Tri-Grip range starts at 1.25kg for smaller jumps in weight.
Many home gyms use both: bumpers for deadlifts and Olympic lifts, and tri-grips for bench press and accessory work.
03
What are your weight plates made of?
Our weight plates are made from rubber, cast iron or vinyl.
Our competition plates have a rubber body around a steel centre, and our Vinyl 1 Inch plates have a vinyl shell with a concrete filling.
04
What do the colours on weight plates mean?
Coloured weight plates follow a standardised colour code, so you can tell each weight apart at a glance.
Our Coloured Competition Change Plates use the same standardised format, where a 0.5kg plate is white, 1kg is green, 1.25kg is yellow, 2kg is blue and 2.5kg is red.
05
What are fractional plates for?
Fractional plates add small amounts of weight to a barbell or dumbbell, so you can progress in smaller increments.
We sell two types:
They're useful when you've stalled on a lift.
06
What is the heaviest weight plate you sell?
Our heaviest single weight plate is a 25kg bumper plate, and our lightest is a 0.25kg fractional plate. All of our plates are sold in pairs.
07
What hole size are weight plates?
Weight plates come in two hole sizes, 1-inch and 2-inch, and must match your barbell's sleeve diameter.
2-inch weight plates are sometimes called Olympic standard and are the most common kind. They're what your local gym will use, and all our Olympic weight plates fit 2-inch sleeves.
1-inch plates are built for homes and more affordable setups, and fit smaller 1-inch bars. Check your bar's sleeve diameter before ordering, as barbell length alone doesn't guarantee a fit.
08
What weight plates should I use for deadlifts?
It's best to use rubber bumper weight plates for deadlifts, since they're all an equal diameter.
This keeps the bar at the same starting height across different plate weights, and their rubber construction is built to take impact.
09
What weight plates should I use for bench press?
All of our weight plates are suitable for bench press and other pushing movements. Some customers prefer tri-grip plates for this exercise, since they're easy to take on and off the bar, and they come in 1.25kg and 2.5kg sizes for smaller jumps in weight.
10
Are your weight plates suitable for beginners?
Yes, our Rubber Tri-Grip plates start at 1.25kg, so beginners can start light and add weight gradually.
11
Can I use weight plates without a barbell?
Yes, our tri-grip weight plates can be used without a barbell for exercises such as plate raises, curls and Russian twists.
The three handles give you a secure grip from any angle.
12
Do I need collars for weight plates?
Yes, use collars whenever you load plates onto a barbell. They stop plates sliding along the sleeve, which keeps the bar balanced and is a key safety feature.
We sell three types:
13
Can I drop my weight plates after a set?
Yes, our bumper plates are built to be dropped after a set. The most durable of these are our competition metal core plates, which have the added benefit of being slimmer than the rest of our range.
Our rubber tri-grips can handle the odd drop, but we recommend lowering them where you can. Don't drop cast iron plates, as they can damage your floor and the plates.
14
Where should I store my weight plates?
We recommend storing your weight plates on a compatible weight plate rack or your squat rack itself.
This keeps your gym's floor space clear and your plates within reach.
15
Do your weight plates come with a warranty?
Yes, all our weight plates come with a 1-year warranty.
Our warranty page explains what's covered and how to make a claim.
