Maintaining a home gym is a crucial but sometimes overlooked part of the process. When you’ve spent thousands of pounds on equipment, the last thing you want is the materials wearing out sooner than they should.
Your floor tiles are the foundation of your home gym and should be looked after accordingly. Taking care of your equipment means you’ll have a tidy, presentable and long-lasting home gym, so here’s what you need to keep in mind with your floor tiles and free weights.
Gym flooring maintenance
Maintaining gym flooring is a simple process.
1. Hoover regularly
The first step when cleaning your gym flooring is to hoover them. Going straight in with a bucket and mop won’t do you any favours as the material of gym floor tiles doesn’t clean well if the surface isn’t smooth. So hoover thoroughly to remove any dust, debris or little stones that have made their way in from outside to stop them from wearing out your tiles.
2. Clean with the right equipment
After hoovering your home gym, you’re ready to clean the floor tiles. It’s important not to use industrial cleaners on gym flooring; keep it gentle with a general floor cleaner diluted with water. Bleach and other strong cleaners can leave marks on your floor tiles or, in some cases, damage them.
3. Wear indoor trainers
To really protect your gym flooring the best you can, our advice is to keep a pair of indoor trainers in the gym. We know this isn’t feasible for everyone but it really is the best way to prevent dust and debris building up in your gym from your shoes.
Follow those simple steps and you’ll have a well-maintained and presentable gym floor. But what about the equipment itself? We’ve got you covered there, too!
Dumbbell maintenance
Looking after your dumbbells is nice and easy too.
1. De-rusting your handles
Our go-to cleaning solution for dumbbells and barbells is 3-in-one oil. Grab a dumbbell brush or any other brush with tough bristles, apply the oil and scrub the metal. This will penetrate the rust and have your metal shining in no time.
2. Protecting the rubber ends
If you’re noticing the rubber ends of your dumbbells getting frayed or looking a bit bleak, apply a coating of silicone oil to resurrect their shine.

Following these steps will help keep your gym presentable and extend the lifespan of your equipment. It may feel like a bit of a chore in the moment, but that feeling of seeing your space glistening is well worth it!
