What you should know about home gym equipment

We often say that we’re in the business of giving people their time back. When life gets hectic, it can be hard to justify the commute and time spent training in a commercial gym, especially if the only time you can go is during the after-work rush.

Working out from home allows you to stay on top of your fitness without the time sink – not to mention how the monthly cost of a membership quickly adds up, especially when the whole family uses it.

We specialise in home gym equipment, and have answered your common questions below. Reach out to our team if you’d rather chat to someone individually.

FAQs:

01

Home gym vs traditional gym: which is better?

There are pros and cons to both, but a home gym will always win on convenience while a traditional gym has a wider range of equipment to use.

The benefits of a home gym are that there’s no commute, no monthly fees and the equipment is yours whenever you need it. This is a breath of fresh air for a lot of customers as it means there’s no more waiting for machines or planning your session around what’s available.

That’s not to say traditional gyms don’t have their place, though. You’ll find a much wider range of equipment in a commercial space and there’s a social side you don’t get from training at home.

02

What is home gym equipment?

Home gym equipment is fitness equipment made for strength, conditioning and cardio training at home, designed to take up as little space as possible. It can be anything from a pair of dumbbells to a full all-in-one trainer. If it gets you working out at home, then it counts in our eyes.

03

What are the benefits of a home gym?

The main benefits of a home gym are lower long-term cost, convenience and time saved.

  • Cost: There’s no monthly membership. The equipment costs more upfront, but it pays for itself in the long run, and we have flexible payment options if you’d rather spread the cost over time.
  • Convenience: A home gym is never more than a room away, letting you fit in a quick workout in the time it’d take to drive to the gym and back.
  • Time: With no commute or distractions, you regain control of your evenings.
  • Privacy: Feel self-conscious training around other people? There’s no one to judge, real or imagined, in a home gym.

04

What should I buy for my home gym?

Start with free weights. A few dumbbells or kettlebells will get you the most bang for your buck, and can be used to train your whole body.

If you have the space and are looking for something that can genuinely replace your gym membership, then an all-in-one trainer that combines cables, a squat rack and even a smith machine in some cases is your best bet.

Add a bench, barbell and weight plates, and you’ll have everything you need for complete gym sessions from home.

05

How much does a home gym cost?

You can get a solid home gym setup for under £500. As you pay more, you’ll get access to a wider range of equipment with a more premium build quality.

  • Under £500: Weight bench & light dumbbell set
  • £500 - £999: Weight bench & full dumbbell set
  • £1,000 - £1,999: Plate-loaded all-in-one trainer package
  • £2,000 - £2,999: Pin-loaded all-in-one trainer package
  • £3,000 - £3,999: Premium pin-loaded all-in-one trainer package
  • £4,000 - £4,999: Commercial-grade all-in-one trainer package
  • £5,000+: Complete, bespoke setup

06

Is a home gym suitable for beginners?

Yes, a home gym is ideal for beginners since you can build confidence and learn the basics in your own time, in your own space, without any feelings of gym anxiety. Start with a few dumbbells, kettlebells or resistance bands to get used to the common lifts. As you grow more confident, you can add to your selection or start training in a commercial gym.

07

How much space do I need for a home gym?

You can set up a home gym in almost any space, but having a dedicated room or garage makes things easier.

A corner of the bedroom is plenty big enough for a weight bench and some dumbbells, which is enough to get started with. If you’re in a position where you have a garden or outhouse to convert, then we highly recommend investing in an all-in-one trainer to cover the main lifts you’d go to a gym to perform.

Our Multi-Functional Trainer is always a popular choice here, while our Phase 3 Modular adds another level of build quality to your home gym.

08

How do I maintain a home gym?

The textbook answer is that you should wipe your equipment down after each session, clean it on a regular basis and check bolts, cables and moving parts for wear. Realistically, though, the schedule below is enough to maintain your home gym.

  • Every week: Wipe down your equipment and make sure it remains dry
  • Every month: Clean the floor and check that bolts haven’t loosened
  • Every 3-6 months: Check cables and apply silicone oil to the machine’s guide rods if they’re feeling tight

09

How do I create a home gym on a budget?

You can build a home gym on a budget by prioritising equipment that does more than one job. A FID bench can be set in flat, incline and decline angles. A set of dumbbells can be used to train compound lifts as well as isolation exercises. A barbell can be used when you’re ready to start adding some serious weight.

The good thing about a home gym is that you don’t need to buy everything in one purchase. You should have an idea of what might go in the space over time, to avoid buying equipment that becomes redundant later down the line, but there’s nothing wrong with getting the essentials and building from there.

10

Can I use my home gym for cardio?

Yes, there are lots of treadmills and cardio machines designed specifically for home use. Both our P100 and P200 treadmills fold away when not in use, keeping your home clear.

11

How do I stay motivated to use my home gym regularly?

Start small and choose a schedule you can stick to. Two 30-minute full-body sessions per week is a good starting point. This is a realistic target for most people and avoids the risk of burning out. Training should be fun!

Besides that, we’d recommend getting a fitness app to keep you accountable in these sessions. We have a free workout tracking app for this very reason.

12
